I'm Not Sure This Is Progress
So I asked Maddie how recess went
yesterday, after Monday’s big heart saga. “Much
better!” Maddie sang out.
“Great!” I cheered. “How so?”
“Well, I decided it was best if I just avoided that boy
completely.”
Um, what?
“What do you mean – the boy
from the day before who wasn’t allowed to play with
you?” I asked.
“Yeah. I figured we just wouldn’t be able to get along
and just stayed away from him the whole time.”
“O-kay. Is he mean to you, is that why you can’t get
along?” I probed.
“No, not at all! I don’t even know him,” she
answered.
“Well, do your friends make fun of you if you try to play
with him?” I continued.
Maddie stared at me uncomprehendingly. “My friends would
NEVER make fun of me, Mommy.”
Ok, good. Not to that age yet. But –
“So why can’t you get along?” I pushed.
Maddie grew frustrated. “It just seemed hard. And I
wasn’t sure what to do. So it seems better this way.”
Oh, my baby. I hate seeing it hard, but the Guardian Mommy in me is
kind of glad she sees her limit and stopped trying to be perfect.
Is that wrong?
