Day 2

Madeleine’s first cold seems to be a mercifully short one; a sort of starter cold, if you will, breaking us in gently.  She slept through her first full night of sickness as she normally does, which told me she’s not hugely congested to begin with.  I woke up the second morning hoping she was all better, but alas, ‘twas not the case.

Her eating was still off, and her mood swings still erratic, but I could see that Maddie was beginning to feel better on her second day of sickness.  Unlike her mother.

The one problem?  The kid wouldn’t nap.

She usually takes her first –and main – nap around 11 or 11:30, and right at 11 she got all droopy and snuggly, right on cue.  One nursing later, she was bright-eyed and ready to continue her day.  Yep, she suckered me out of a nursing, that’s for sure.

And the funny thing was, she didn’t seem tired.  She wasn’t on any decongestant, so I know that’s not it.  It’s as if her immune system was working to lick the cold and giving her an adrenaline surge or something.  She finally went down for her first – and only – nap at 3 p.m.  I figured she’d sleep a good hour and a half, maybe two if I was lucky.

Forty-five minutes later she popped up, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.  Something happened during those 45 minutes to maker her feel much better.  Unlike her mother, who used those 45 minutes to wind down and realize how tired she felt.

For the rest of the day it was the Maddie Show, with her ping-ponging brightly from one activity to the next.  Singing, dancing, acrobatics on the big ball, musical instruments, peek-a-boo, chasing the kitty, pushing her ride-on toy, pushing her Leapfrog toy, you name it, and if it requires effort from Mommy, Madeleine did it.

She still had the occasional runny nose, but the sneezing and cough were gone and she had found a new lease on life.  Who knows if Day 3 will be all better or a relapse, but Maddie seems to have weathered her first cold very well.

Unlike her mother.
